CLUB SPOTLIGHT: Evolution Freestyle

Evolution Freestyle was started back in 2014, by families in the Tawatinaw area. It was started with the intent to provide club level athletes access to dryland training facilities (trampoline, strength and agility, and airbag), to be able to safely and effectively increase their fitness and skill levels as they progressed to the Provincial and National competition levels.

As a not-for-profit society the club strives to provide safe, fun and effective off-season (May-Nov) dryland training for club, provincial and national level athletes.

✍🏻 Jared Thompson, President

“We strive to be an open and welcoming club for all levels of athletes and for skiers from all clubs across the province. We are very much a community first organization and by partnering with other groups in our area, like the Tawatinaw Valley Ski Hill and the Pine Valley Gymnastics Center, we strive to provide local high quality opportunities for our athletes to train. We also aim to foster a community environment at our facility as we encourage families to attend and even camp out during training events to further support and grow the ski community as a whole.”

“This last season we saw over 80 athletes and families from across the province attend events at the Evolution Freestyle facility. These athletes ranged from first time club athletes, to athletes on the roster of both the Alberta Provincial Park and Pipe team and Moguls team.

Typically, we start our programming in mid May and run camps throughout the summer, culminating with a fall dryland training series.  We offer multi-day and single day weekend camps throughout the season, as well as weekday evening drop in sessions on Tuesdays throughout the summer. Our coaches focus on early off-season goal setting with our athletes and they work throughout the season to achieve those goals. The fall sessions are designed by our coaches to progress athletes toward the on-snow season, working towards what new skills they are going to take from Air Bag to snow. We also host other clubs for their own specific team building and training on site throughout the year. We will be wrapping up our training season here at the end of the month and preparing our site for a new Air Bag to be installed next year.

Our coaches and the EVO organization place a lot of emphasis on helping athletes of all skill levels improve. We focus on goal setting, fitness as well as confidence building activities for our athletes.  We offer different programming for athletes, ranging from our First Time Flyer camps for beginner athletes, to open camps for athletes at the Club Comp and Provincial Comp levels.  We also endeavour to host Girlstylerz camps to continue growing female participation in the sport. Stay tuned, as next year we will be looking to offer more events with speakers and experts to present information to our athletes on topics like mental health and nutrition.”
