Chief of Course Clinic March 25, 2023

Learn what’s involved in becoming a Technical Director (TD) or Chief of Course for club and provincial-level freestyle comps! This on-site training is for parents / club members and club leaders to learn what is involved in officiating at Club and Provincial level competitions. This is regional training meant to prepare clubs to run their own events. You do not require any previous experience but you should be a proficient skier/boarder in order to access the courses.

Mike Plemel will lead you through a TD’s responsibilities and Kevin Mullie will address the role of  Chief of Course, while you shadow them as they actively perform their duties during the Championship.

  • Technical Directors are at the heart of the safety and accuracy of competitions.  The TD ensures safety of the courses by measuring, following FIS or Freestyle Canada protocol, and working with hill and comp crews to confirm proper set-up and maintenance.  The TD works with the Chief of Competition, Chief of Course and Head Judge to help the comp run smoothly and on time.  At the end of the event, the TD submits a detailed report and site plan to Freestyle Alberta/Freestyle Canada. Refer to the TD Job Description.
  • The Chief of Course is focused on the respective course’s safety, quality, function, maintenance needs and distribution of workers and attendants. Refer to the Chief of Course Job Description

The time commitment for this clinic is a one-hour introduction from 5:00-6:00 PM on Friday, March 24 in the WinSport day lodge theatre followed by a half-to-full day commitment on Saturday, March 25 during the slopestyle event.
