Founded in Southern Alberta and rooted in a strong freestyle legacy, Castle Freestyle Ski Club offers athletes a dynamic, community-driven environment focused on progression, skill development, and high-energy mountain culture. With deep ties to Castle Mountain Resort, the club continues to build on decades of freestyle tradition while developing the next generation of skiers. Plus, the vibes are high at Castle!
Why and when was the club founded?
Castle Freestyle Ski Club was founded in 1996 as the Wild West Freestyle Ski Club, created to provide Southern Alberta with a local option for freestyle training. The Wild West club helped establish many of the facilities still used today, and it’s come full circle—many early Wild West athletes now have children enrolled in Castle Freestyle.
What disciplines does the club focus on?
Castle Freestyle supports athlete development across moguls, slopestyle, big air, and freeride.
Who are the club’s coaches?
The coaching team is led by Davis Clement (Freestyle) and Ayla Peacock (Freeride), supported by 10 additional coaches and junior coaches who bring energy, experience, and passion to every training day.
Which volunteers make a big impact?
Castle Freestyle relies on a dedicated volunteer community. Special thanks go to volunteer coordinator Cam Hazell, fundraising coordinator Matt Schoenroth, and key volunteers Mark and Cara Baird, Pierre Champness, Josh Jordet, Danelle Kilbourn, Ryan Ross, Adam Warkentin, Jamie Weeks, along with the club’s hardworking volunteer Board, led by Club President John Power.
What circuits do Castle athletes compete on?
Athletes primarily compete in club-level competitions and on the IFSA freeride circuit.
Where does the club train, and what does training look like?
Training takes place at Castle Mountain Resort, with a strong focus on all-mountain skills, moguls, and air awareness, taking full advantage of Castle’s natural terrain and challenging conditions.
Notable alumni
Recent alumni include Analise Perry (Team Alberta, 2nd at Slopestyle Nationals), Liam Grier (Junior Freeride Championships, Verbier), and Brayden Baird (provincial medalist). The club is also proud of current coach Davis Clement, a former Team Alberta athlete and Junior National Champion.
Club highlight events
Castle Mountain Resort has a long history of hosting provincial-level events. In recent years, the club has focused on IFSA and club-level competitions as it develops a new generation of athletes.
Memorable moments
One standout moment came at the Fernie 2★ IFSA freeride event last season, where Castle Freestyle athletes competed in extremely blustery conditions. Odin Jordet earned a 2nd-place finish in U19 Men—on tele skis. Sharing updates throughout the weekend captured attention across the club and inspired younger athletes.
Anything else people should know?
The vibes are high at Castle. With a strong group of coaches, athletes, and volunteers, Castle Freestyle Ski Club is committed to improving every day—both on and off the hill.
