Coach Spotlight: Daniel Gutierrez

Growing up in Mexico, Daniel’s passion for sports began with soccer. When he moved to Canada, he embraced a broader range of activities and discovered a deeper passion for strength and conditioning. Always excelling in physical performance, Dan recognized that his athletic ability stemmed from a love for training, which inspired him to pursue a career in kinesiology at the age of 18.

After earning his degree, Dan landed his first internship with the Canadian Sport Institute (CSI), where he began honing his expertise in athlete development. Today, he primarily works with freestyle skiers and para-athletes, focusing on building maximum strength and explosive power.

His coaching philosophy centers on creating a positive and supportive training environment.

“It needs to be enjoyable and fun for the athlete,” he explains. “When athletes are comfortable, they can be pushed hard without breaking down mentally. I see them as humans first and athletes second.”

While the gym can’t directly make skiers better at their sport, says Dan, it plays a crucial role in enhancing resilience. His goal is to develop stronger, healthier athletes who can train longer and reduce the risk of injury. “I want to make them better athletes to help them stay in the game and perform at their best for the long run.”

With an approach that not only builds physical strength but also fosters confidence and sustainability in sport, Dan is helping athletes achieve their goals while maintaining their well-being.

Freestyle Alberta is fortunate to have this dedicated and talented coach working with our athletes.
