A Major Milestone for Our Community

Freestyle Alberta (FA) is proud to share an important milestone for our sport and community: the launch of Alberta’s province-wide Safe Sport system.

After several years of collaboration across the provincial sport sector, Alberta has officially introduced the Alberta Safe Sport Complaint Mechanism—an independent system for reporting all concerns related to safe sport conduct during FA activities. Submitted concerns are reviewed by an independent third party (ITP) and directed to the appropriate jurisdiction, including both provincial and national processes where applicable. FA has been actively involved in this work and is proud to formally adopt:

“Over the past several years, we’ve worked closely with our Government of Alberta partners and the Alberta Sport Leadership Association to help shape a system that reflects the needs of our sport community,” said Jeremy Cooper, Executive Director. “This launch represents meaningful progress and a shared commitment to building an environment where participants feel safe, supported, and respected.”

What this means for all FA participants

With the adoption of these policies:

  • All FA participants are bound by the Alberta Universal Code of Conduct
  • This applies to athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, staff, and board members
  • The AB UCC establishes clear, province-wide expectations for behaviour
  • It defines prohibited conduct, including discrimination, harassment, and boundary violations
  • Participation in FA activities reflects a shared commitment to a safe, respectful environment

Independent reporting through the ABSSCM

FA has adopted the ABSSCM as the exclusive, independent process for reporting and addressing serious misconduct:

  • Reports are managed by an Independent Third Party (ITP)
  • The system ensures neutral, fair, and consistent handling of complaints
  • It applies to all FA members and FA-related activities
  • It provides clear pathways for reporting, investigation, and resolution
  • It addresses serious concerns such as abuse, harassment, discrimination, and neglect

Our shared commitment to Safe Sport

“Creating a safe sport environment is ongoing work,” says Cooper. “It requires consistency, accountability, and a willingness from all of us to uphold strong standards. This system gives our community the structure and confidence to do that together.”
